Major Irish motorway CLOSED for hours after smoke from gorse fire engulfs road amid Dublin M50 traffic alert
A MAJOR Irish motorway was forced to close overnight due to dangerous driving conditions as thick smoke engulfed the road.
The M7 from Limerick to Dublin closed on Thursday evening as black smoke was spotted coming from gorse fires.

The smoke took over part of the road, leaving motorists driving in treacherous conditions.
The motorway was closed in both directions between Junction 28 Castletroy, around 4km east of the Castleconnell area, and Junction 25 Nenagh.
Videos shared across social media show the extremity of the smoke as it took over parts of the road.
The gorse fires were reported to have started shortly after 6pm.
Fire crews from Limerick city, Nenagh, Newport and Cappamore were all called to the scene to fight the blaze.
As the road was closed off, traffic delays ensued and diversions were put in place for drivers.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland said: “Incident on M7 between J26 to J28 in both directions.
“Lanes affected: Full Road Closure, Diversions in place due to Gorse fire which is affecting visibility in the area.”
Gardai also confirmed that no collisions or injuries were reported following the disruption.
A garda spokesperson said: “To date, we have received no reports of a collision at this location.
“However, we are aware of gorse fires affecting visibility and traffic along the route. We understand local fire services are currently at the scene.”
The motorway has since reopened to traffic this morning.
Elsewhere on Irish roads, there is congestion this morning on Dublin’s M50.
There is traffic building on the northbound route between Junction 9 Red Cow and Junction 6 M50/N3, as well as at Junction 7 M50/N4.
TII said: “Some delays to your journey may occur. When approaching the congestion location, reduce your speed and drive with caution.”
FIRE ALERT
The fires come as Government chiefs warned that as temperatures rise to 21C this week, high fire risks are a high possibility across the country.
Met Eireann experts confirmed the best heat of the week will be felt on Friday, when parts of Ireland will be hotter than European sun spots.
And due to the abnormally high temperatures for the time of year, areas where “hazardous fuels such as dead grasses and shrub fuels exist” remain a threat for wildfires.
A Government statement said: “Strongly elevated fire risks are expected in areas with fire-prone upland vegetation types, and fire
behaviour and spread rates are likely to be strongly influenced by lower humidity levels associated with easterly winds and elevated windspeeds, which may exceed 20kph at times.
BE VIGILANT ALERT
“Recent fire activity appears to be focused on areas associated with active turf cutting and illegal waste dumping, and additional vigilance is warranted in these areas.
“Members of the public and visitors to recreational areas should be vigilant and report all suspicious activity to An Garda Siochana.
“All rural users should cooperate with all requests regarding fire safety, obey all relevant bye-laws and be considerate in parking vehicles so as not to impede access by emergency vehicles.”
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine urge that fire lines, fire plans and fire suppression equipment should be reviewed and at the ready in case of an emergency situation.
Forest owners, farmers, rural dwellers and other countryside users are being asked to remain vigilant when it comes to fire activities.
Any suspicious or illegal activity should be reported immediately.
The public are being reminded that it is an offence to cut, grub, burn or otherwise destroy any vegetation growing on any land not
then cultivated between March 1 and August 31.
All activity of this nature should be reported to the Gardai.

Jamaican rapist can’t be deported because his crimes are TOO severe & put his ‘life at risk’ back home
A JAMAICAN rapist cannot be deported because his crimes are too severe and would put his “life at risk” in his home country.
The convicted sex attacker entered a witness protection program on the Caribbean island as a child.
This was because his mother testified about a murder committed by a gang leader.
He later relocated to the UK where he was sent to prison multiple times for rape, unlawful wounding and burglaries.
The Home Office tried to deport him but he appealed on the grounds that he would not be allowed back into witness protection in Jamaica.
His argument was initially dismissed but has now been allowed by an immigration tribunal on human rights grounds.
Now the criminal – who was granted anonymity – will be allowed to remain in the UK.
The appeal level of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber was told the sex offender entered the UK in 2001 as a visitor.
As a child his mother was a police informant for many years and aided the conviction and imprisonment of a gang leader for murder.
As a result of this the family entered Jamaican witness protection in 1997, the year he turned 13, and two years later his mother relocated to the UK.
He stayed in Jamaica and was moved around several times by the witness protection team.
After entering the UK in 2001, the criminal was initially granted leave to remain as a student and then became a visa overstayer.

He applied for asylum in 2006 but while his application was pending he was convicted of unlawful wounding and burglaries.
He was given a prison sentence of four years and eight months in 2009.
Four years later, and by then an adult, he was jailed for nine years for rape.
Following his release he was recalled to prison in November 2022.
The Home Office first issued a deportation order in 2019 on the basis that his convictions excluded him from refugee protection.
The Jamaican appealed this on the grounds he would be “at risk” if he was sent back.
Prior to the hearing, the Home Office contacted the Jamaican Ministry of National Security to confirm if he had been in the witness protection program.
Officials in Jamaica said the likelihood of harm to him would be “high” and there was also a risk of “psychological trauma” if he returned.
The Ministry added there was “no guarantee” he would be accepted back into witness protection.
His 2023 appeal was dismissed on the basis there was a “real possibility” he would be allowed back into witness protection.
However, a judge has now ruled that decision was wrong.
Judge Leonie Hirst said there was a “real risk” the rapist would not be allowed back into witness protection.
Amandaland actor SPLITS with TV star wife after 23 years together
AMANDALAND star Peter Serafinowicz has reportedly split from his wife Sarah Alexander after 23 years together.
The actor, 51, and the Coupling actress, 53, have quietly separated, sources have revealed.

Before she met Peter, Sarah was in a relationship with actor Gerald Harper, who is 40 years her senior.
It lasted just a year before Sarah called time on the partnership and moved on with Peter.
The pair share a son and a daughter, and had been considered one of the UK’s most low-key showbiz couples.
A source told Daily Mail: “It’s very sad, but the split is recent.”
Sarah featured in his shows Look Around You as well as O! News, a spoof of the American E! News.
Sarah also found fame in the States by starring on US series Teachers, produced by NBC.
Meanwhile Peter has been entertaining viewers on screen in the hit BBC comedy Amandaland as Amanda’s flashy South African property developer boyfriend Johannes.
The Liverpool-born comedian first made his mark with The Peter Serafinowicz Show in 2007, and now hosts Netflix’s Million Dollar Secret, a high-stakes reality show where 12 strangers compete for a life-changing sum of money.
Away from the screen, Peter has had a colourful journey.
He was once part of a band called Hippy Trousers, but then broke into broadcasting with a spoof documentary for Radio 1 in 1993 before hitting TV fame in Spaced alongside Simon Pegg.
He’s also had iconic roles in Shaun of the Dead, Doctor Who, Rick and Morty, and famously voiced Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
Peter was BAFTA-nominated for his self-titled sketch show and became a cult favourite for his character Brian Butterfield, who he later toured with across the UK.
His sister Helen created Amandaland while his brother James is a film producer.
Peter recently opened up about his private life, revealing he was diagnosed with ADHD at 40.
He told i Paper: “I only found out 10 years ago, and really even more recently than that – like a year or two ago – realised just how severely it’s affected my life.
“Having ADHD for me, it’s like being a genius, and also being a total idiot.
“Some things I can do really super well, and there are some very, very, very basic things that I find almost impossible.
“I think that’s true for a lot of people with ADHD.”
He now co-hosts the podcast I’m ADHD, No You’re Not with Paul Whitehouse and Dr Mine Conkbayir MBE, offering laughs and honest insights into the condition.
Meanwhile, Amandaland has been renewed for a second series, with Amanda now divorced and adjusting to life in SoHa (South Harlesden) with teenage kids Manus and Georgie.

Who are the Millennium Dome raid thieves and when did they try to execute the De Beers diamond heist?
IN the year 2000, a crew of criminals tried to steal a 350million diamond collection from the Millennium Dome.
The gang of hardened villains opened up about their roles in the heist in a new Netflix doc, which is co-executive produced by Guy Ritchie.

On November 7, 2000, a gang of criminals smashed through security barriers at the Millennium Dome in broad daylight with a supercharged JCB digger.
Their plan was to steal a De Beers diamond collection worth £350million, before making their getaway in a speed boat.
If the heist hadn’t been thwarted by the police, it would have been one of the biggest in history.
The Millennium Dome raid thieves were apprehended during a meticulously planned police operation code-named “Operation Magician”.
More than 200 officers were involved, including armed units disguised as Millennium Dome employees and stationed in hidden locations.
The gang smashed through the Dome’s perimeter fence using a JCB digger, deploying smoke bombs and ammonia in an effort to obscure security measures.
But police waited until they shattered the glass protecting the diamonds — which had been replaced by fakes — before storming the scene.
All of the suspects were arrested within minutes, including accomplices waiting on the River Thames and other nearby locations.
Former armed robber Noel “Razor” Smith revealed how one of the ringleaders of the raid, Bill Cockram, told him in prison he believed the botched burglary was “cursed” after two of the perpetrators died.
In 2022, Noel told The Sun: “He told me, ‘There’s a curse on this job like Brink’s-Mat, you know. We’re all gonna die off’.”
Below we take a look at the members of the gang who tried to pull off the Millennium Dome raid.
Lee Wenham

Lee Wenham, aged 32 at the time of the Millennium Dome raid, was already under suspicion for car theft, drug smuggling and money laundering.
Police surveillance captured him scouting the security gate and visiting the Money Zone exhibition inside the Dome, where the Millennium Jewel collection was displayed.
Wenham played a role in planning the heist and was sentenced to nine years in prison after being convicted of conspiring to steal the gems, as well as for participating in an earlier failed robbery attempt in Aylesford in July 2000.
Ray Betson

Ray Betson, who was 39 at the time, was one of the masterminds behind the raid and had a history of criminal activity.
He drove the JCB digger used to smash through the Dome’s perimeter fence and walls.
Betson was sentenced to 18 years for his role in the raid, though his sentence was later reduced to 15 years on appeal.
In 2014, he received another 13-year sentence for a failed security depot ram raid.
Robert Adams

Robert Adams, aged 55 at the time, wielded a sledgehammer to break through the reinforced glass protecting the diamonds in the Dome.
He was arrested on-site and later sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Adams had no fixed address at the time of his conviction.
Bill Cockram

William Cockram, aged 58 at the time, also played a pivotal role in executing the raid.
He used a powerful nail gun to weaken the reinforced glass protecting the diamonds, before Adams smashed it with a sledgehammer.
Cockram was sentenced to 18 years for his involvement, but it was later reduced to 15 on appeal.
Aldo Ciarrocchi

Aldo Ciarrocchi, aged 30 at the time, threw smoke bombs during the raid to create confusion.
His actions were part of a carefully coordinated plan involving multiple tools and escape strategies.
Ciarrocchi received a 15-year prison sentence following his conviction.
The Diamond Heist
Guy Ritchie has co-executive produced a three-part series looking into the attempted diamond heist at the Millennium Dome.

The series features interviews with both the gang of criminals involved and law enforcement officials who investigated and caught them, offering a comprehensive view of the crime.
In a first look at the series, Lee Wenham tells the camera: “In July 2000, we had a team and the target with the Millennium Star.
“I don’t know anything about diamonds, but I think it was a bit of a piss take putting it where it was — the exciting thing was the diamond.
“I decided to myself it was going to be my last job.
“We needed to figure out how to get inside the vault, get the diamond and get away — if we could pull it off, it would be the biggest heist of all time.”
The Diamond Heist drops on Netflix on April 16, 2025.
