In Moneyball’s opening moments, the camera sees Billy Beane — portrayed by Brad Pitt — sitting alone in an empty, dark Oakland Coliseum. Via handheld radio, he’s listening to the team he acts as General Manager for, the Oakland Athletics, square off against the Yankees in game five of the 2001 American League Division Series. Unable to bear the imminent, season-ending A’s loss he knows is coming, Beane continuously toggles the radio on and off every few seconds. Eventually, he hears that the Yankees have won, flicks the radio off for good, and walks out of the stadium.
